Garden fresh lettuce and herbs in January? In Wisconsin?

It’s a real treat to have a salad featuring fresh lettuce from one’s own garden – especially in Wisconsin during the middle of January!  This photo shows a planter full of lettuce seeded in early december.  Along with the lettuce are batches of parsley and English Thyme seeded last spring and brought into the basement growing room prior to the last frost of the season.

The thyme and parsley are used whenever a particular dish calls for these fresh herbs. We  harvest lettuce 1/3 of the planter at a time (enough for 2 salads).  By the time the last third is harvested, the first third is just about ready again.

It won’t be long until the growing room is full of seeding trays.  My gardening calendar shows nearly 800 onions and leeks are scheduled to be seeded the third week of February.

  1. I can imagine your green thumbs are itching. Your gardens are works of art. It was good having time with you at the dinner. Mac and Cheese soon?
